Fourteen Bottles.
Cécile Zarokian.
She wrote her first fragrance while she was still a trainee, and it is still one of the most recognisable perfumes Amouage sells. Fourteen of her compositions are in stock right now, across eight houses that have almost nothing else in common.
Perfumer Spotlight
Most people who own an Amouage bottle could not name the perfumer. If the bottle is Epic, Royal Tobacco or Outlands, the answer is the same person, and she has been writing some of the best niche perfumery of the last fifteen years while the houses took the credit.
Cécile Zarokian is French, of Armenian descent, and trained at ISIPCA before spending four years at Robertet. She composed Epic Woman while she was still a trainee there. It launched in 2009, it is still one of Amouage's best selling women's fragrances, and it remains the clearest statement of what she does: spice worn close to skin, a rose that refuses to be decorative, and a base that keeps going long after the opening has burned off.
In 2011 she left to work for herself and opened her own laboratory in Paris. That decision is the reason her name is on this many houses. She has no corporate library of ready made bases to pull from, she starts from a blank page, and she is known for submitting a single proposal she believes in rather than three hedged options. Amouage is the only major house that hires an independent perfumer, and she is the independent they hire.
Amber is her stated favourite note. Look at Epic, Silver Oud and Royal Tobacco and you can see her keep returning to the same warmth from different directions.
The awards followed. Material was shortlisted for the Fragrance Foundation France Awards in 2022. Opus XIV Royal Tobacco took a Fragrance Foundation Award in the USA in 2023. Outlands won the Marie Claire Prix International du Parfum in 2024. She has worked on roughly a hundred released fragrances across more than forty brands, and she is still running the studio, the client relationships and the finances herself.
What follows is everything of hers we currently have in 2ml, house by house. Read it as a map of one perfumer rather than eight separate brands, because that is the only way you hear what she actually sounds like.
Amouage
The longest relationship of her career and the reason most people have smelled her work without knowing it. Fifteen years, an award shelf, and a house that keeps handing her the biggest briefs it has.
Epic Woman
$20.79 · 2ml · 2009The one that started it, written while she was still a trainee. Cumin, pink pepper and cinnamon open hot and faintly skin like, then damascena rose, geranium and tea build the heart before oud, frankincense and guaiac run a very long base. The cumin is the dividing line. Read it as skin and this is one of the great spiced roses.
Cumin · Pink Pepper · Damascena Rose · Frankincense · Oud
Opus XIV Royal Tobacco
$12.99 · 2ml · Award WinnerOmani frankincense meeting Cuban tobacco at imperial scale. Tobacco and licorice surrounded by cardamom, anise, lavender, balsams, birch tar, oud and incense. Maximalist in the best Amouage tradition, and it unfolds in waves rather than a straight line. The Fragrance Foundation gave it a US award in 2023 and it deserved it.
Frankincense · Cardamom · Tobacco · Licorice · Birch Tar · Oud
Outlands
$14.99 · 2ml · 2024Bright citrus at the edge of a vast resinous wilderness. Bergamot, lemon and Sichuan pepper over patchouli, rose and saffron, then amber, incense, birch, vanilla and oud. The sparkling opening never fully disappears, it just keeps lighting up the dark resins underneath. Marie Claire's Prix International du Parfum, 2024.
Bergamot · Sichuan Pepper · Patchouli · Saffron · Ambergris · Oud
Epic 56 Woman
$16.99 · 2ml · ExtraitEpic returned to twelve years later and turned up. Rose, jasmine tea and spice concentrated over oud, incense, amber, musk and creamy woods. Grand, saturated and slow moving. If Epic Woman is the argument, this is the argument delivered from a stage.
Cinnamon · Cumin · Rose · Jasmine Tea · Frankincense · SandalwoodAlso from Amouage
$10.99 · 2mlEpic Man, the masculine counterpart to her debut and credited to the same team, drives pepper, cardamom, saffron and cumin through myrrh, oud, leather and persistent frankincense. Worth wearing beside Epic Woman to hear how differently the same idea can be built.
Masque Milano
Masque builds its line like an opera, one act at a time, and hands each act to a different perfumer. She has three of them, which is more than anyone else on the roster.
III-IV Tango
$12.99 · 2ml · 2014A mid summer night and a dance that gets too close. Bergamot, black pepper and cardamom open before sambac jasmine absolute, damascena rose oil, cumin and patchouli take the floor, landing on vanilla bean, tonka, melilot, amber and leather. Warm, sensual and built as a crescendo rather than a pyramid.
Black Pepper · Sambac Jasmine · Rose Oil · Cumin · Amber · Leather
Tango Oud
$18.99 · 2ml · 2023The same dance, nine years later, in the dark. Pink pepper, bergamot and cardamom into centifolia rose, jasmine sambac, cumin and Malaccensis oud, finishing on leather, benzoin, sandalwood and vanilla. The oud is properly animalic rather than decorative. Cumin plus that oud makes the first ten minutes a test, and the florals win eventually.
Cardamom · Rose · Jasmine Sambac · Cumin · Malaccensis Oud · Leather
Petra
$12.99 · 2ml · 2020A woman in a silk dress leaving through a door you did not know was there. Bergamot, yellow mandarin and pink pepper over sambac jasmine absolute, rose maroc and a luqaimat accord, the fried dough and date syrup pastry, then incense, patchouli, benzoin, myrrh, leather and an ambergris infusion. The gourmand touch is the surprise and the incense is what makes it stay.
Yellow Mandarin · Rose Maroc · Luqaimat · Incense · Myrrh · AmbergrisNishane
Ani is named after the ruined medieval Armenian capital, and she is of Armenian descent. It became Nishane's biggest seller and got a follow up. Personal work that also happens to be commercial work, which almost never happens.
Ani
$10.79 · 2ml · Extrait de ParfumVanilla with a backbone, spiced and woody and a long way from dessert. Bergamot, blue ginger and pink pepper open before blackcurrant, Turkish rose and cardamom move through the heart, then patchouli, cedar, vanilla, benzoin, ambergris and sandalwood carry it out. Ani earns the hype because the vanilla never goes flat.
Blue Ginger · Blackcurrant · Turkish Rose · Cardamom · Vanilla · AmbergrisJovoy Paris
Private Label came out the same year she went independent, and it is the clearest proof that she is not only a spice and amber perfumer. Nothing warm about it at all.
Private Label
$10.99 · 2ml · 2011Dry smoke rising off papyrus and birch. Papyrus opens smoky and papery, vetiver and patchouli hold the centre, and birch, cistus, sandalwood and cedar close it leathery and dark. One of the more convincing smoky woods in niche, with birch that reads like tar rather than campfire. It is unrelentingly dry, so anyone wanting sweetness should stay away.
Papyrus · Vetiver · Patchouli · Birch · Cistus · CedarwoodFour More Rooms
Four houses, four completely different briefs, one perfumer. This is the part of her catalogue that makes the case better than any single bottle can.
Vanilla Edesia
$10.99 · 2ml · ElectimussVanilla served as a banquet rather than a dessert. Bergamot, mandarin and bitter almond over pink pepper and frankincense, then Ceylon cinnamon, cumin and rose centifolia thicken into a milky heart, with vanilla absolute, cypriol, patchouli and sandalwood underneath. The cumin and cypriol are what save it. Skip it if you wanted frosting.
Bitter Almond · Ceylon Cinnamon · Cumin · Vanilla Absolute · Cypriol
Mon nom est rouge
$12.99 · 2ml · 2012Warm spice circling a rose that refuses to be pretty. Pink pepper, elemi and incense open onto Turkish rose ringed with cardamom, cinnamon, ginger and cumin, then guaiac, papyrus, labdanum and castoreum. The cumin is real and it will divide people. Few roses carry this much skin and smoke behind them.
Elemi · Turkish Rose · Cardamom · Cumin · Labdanum · Castoreum
Cabaret Nocturne
$12.99 · 2ml · 2020The deep cut of the group. Layered aromatic and woody facets settling into a balanced drydown with a genuinely distinctive presence. It has enough character to stand apart while keeping the structure and polish that make it wearable. The one to reach for if you already know the Amouages.
Aromatic · Woody · Textured · Refined · Unisex
Oud Zarian
$18.99 · 2ml · Creed, 2025Rose and aged oud, weighted down with liquorice. Bergamot, ginger and frankincense open bright and resinous, rose centifolia carries the middle, and the base leans on aged oud, myrrh, patchouli, liquorice root and tonka. Creed taking on the Gulf rose oud genre on its own terms, which means more polish and far less barnyard. She lists it in her own portfolio. Creed, as usual, credits nobody, though the name is a fairly loud clue.
Ginger · Frankincense · Rose Centifolia · Aged Oud · Liquorice RootHow to hear a perfumer
- Start with Epic Woman. It is the origin point and every habit she has is already visible in it. Cumin against rose, incense against skin, a base that outlasts the day.
- Then go straight to Private Label. Bone dry, smoky, no amber, no rose. This is the fastest way to prove that what you heard in Epic was a choice rather than a default.
- Put Tango next to Tango Oud. Nine years apart, same idea, one written in warmth and the other in shadow. Very few perfumers get to revisit their own work this openly.
- Watch for the cumin. Epic, Tango, Mon nom est rouge, Vanilla Edesia. She uses it as a skin note, not a spice note, and how you read it will decide how much of her catalogue works on you.
- Everything here is a 2ml KSI hand decant, taken from an authentic bottle into an atomizer so you can wear it properly before committing to a full bottle. Samples are final sale.
- Questions before you order? Email info@kaleidoscopescentindex.com and we will tell you which of the fourteen is actually yours.
