He qualified as a pharmacist, found perfumery through sandalwood distillers in southern India, and has written every single fragrance Rubini has ever released. All eight are here, plus three more from houses that sound nothing like it.
Perfumer Spotlight
Rubini has released eight fragrances in eleven years. Cristiano Canali wrote all eight of them. There are maybe three or four house and perfumer pairings in modern niche with that kind of unbroken run, and this is the one worth paying attention to.
He did not start in perfumery. Canali holds a master's degree in pharmacy, taken up out of family tradition, and wrote his thesis on Ayurvedic products. The door opened in southern India, where he met sandalwood oil producers and got his first real look at the fragrance industry. Natural sandalwood is still his stated favourite material.
He then did the International Master at ISIPCA in Versailles under Bruno Jovanovic, Carlos Benäim, Dominique Ropion and Sophie Labbé, and worked his way through IFF in the Netherlands and Paris, then Argeville, and since 2024 he has been an in house perfumer at MANE in Milan. Somewhere in the middle of that he won the Critics Award at the Scent of Esxence contest, and shortly afterwards a man named Andrea Rubini came looking for an entirely Italian team to build a perfume around his grandfather's 1937 Verona perfumery.
Perfumery is the precise moment when science stops, and art begins.
That is his line, and it fits a man who came in through a pharmacy laboratory. Rubini does not call him a house perfumer, incidentally. Their own site describes the arrangement as a creative friendship, built on time, listening and intuition rather than a commercial brief. He is free to work elsewhere and does, which is exactly why the rest of this list is useful.

Rubini
Founded by Andrea Rubini in tribute to his grandfather Pietro, who opened a small perfumery in Verona in 1937 after returning from the war in Ethiopia. Eight releases, eight Canali compositions, and no two of them in the same register. Read in order they work as a single argument about how much range one perfumer gets when nobody is telling him to play safe.
Fundamental (2015)
$12.99 · 2ml · The originalGrape must, beeswax and iris in a cool cellar. The one that started the house, dedicated to Pietro. Tangerine and Calabrian bergamot open, grapes and Tuscan iris fill the middle alongside beeswax, and cedar, sandalwood, leather and Java vetiver carry it out. The grape smells like fermenting fruit rather than candy, which is rarer than it should be.

Fundamental (2023)
$12.99 · 2ml · Edition 2.023White grapes and cold iris in a room of old leather. The reissue, with lavender moved up top and castoreum added underneath. Bergamot, mandarin and a Soave grape accord lead into iris butter, clary sage and beeswax, then it turns powdery and dry over leather, cacao, vetiver and Atlas cedar. Wine spilled on a cold stone floor. Worth buying beside the 2015 to hear what eight years changed.

Tambour Sacré
$14.99 · 2ml · 2018Roasted coffee lifted by bright citrus and spice. The Horn of Africa rendered as rhythm, tying back to Pietro's return from Ethiopia. Bergamot and orange flare, cardamom and pepper lead into coffee absolute and tuberose, and myrrh, benzoin, tonka and Mysore sandalwood carry a long resinous close. One of the very few coffee fragrances that is not a dessert.

Nuvolari
$14.99 · 2ml · 2021Petrol, hot asphalt, a rose somewhere in the pit lane. A tribute to Tazio Nuvolari and his 1935 Nürburgring win. Italian lemon, black pepper and cold mint hit first alongside a fuel accord and metallic neroli, landing on Haitian vetiver, Laos oud, ambroxan and warm asphalt. The petrol conceit could easily have been a gimmick and is not, because the base underneath is properly built.

Odenaturae

Built on Virgil's bucolic poetry, and the brand names its three tiers Horti, Bucolic Landscape and Grove Woods rather than top, heart and base. Tomato leaf, bitter orange and wild berries open tart, then chamomile, basil, laurel, lentisque and immortelle build a dense herbal middle that softens into rose centifolia, orange flower and broom. Mediterranean scrub, not cut grass.

Hyperion
$14.99 · 2ml · 2024Cold citrus, then an explosion of pepper, then silence. A deep space journey used as a metaphor for inner exploration. Yuzu and juniper open sharp before a loud supernova pepper accord takes the middle, settling slowly into olibanum, Himalayan cedar, patchouli and ambergris. That pepper phase lasts longer than you expect, which is either the appeal or the dealbreaker.

Idìlios
$14.99 · 2ml · 2025Peach skin and warm milk, half asleep. Positioned as the sequel to Hyperion, the calm after the storm. Mandarin and bergamot open briefly before peach, champaca and osmanthus turn honeyed, then coconut and three separate vanilla bean extractions push the base into something soft and lactonic. If you want an osmanthus that reads creamy instead of leathery, this is it. Do not expect it to project.

L'Eau Très Mer
$14.99 · 2ml · 2026Salt on the skin, rum in the glass, pipe smoke downwind. Commandant Cousteau surfacing from a dive and lighting his pipe. Pineapple, grapefruit and salt open, rum and rubber darken the middle, and it lands on driftwood, transparent woods and tobacco. A marine that sidesteps the usual clean calone cliche by reaching for rubber and wet rope instead.

Three briefs from three completely different places, and the reason to be sceptical of anyone who tells you Canali has a house style. Parfumo credits him with roughly thirty six fragrances across sixteen houses, including Masque Milano's Romanza, which remains the other composition people name when they name him.
Bee

He built it as a queen bee's lifecycle, confinement then floral exploration then the return home, around a royal jelly accord with beeswax at the core. Orange and ginger syrup lead into broom, mimosa, heliotrope and orange flower, then benzoin, labdanum, tonka, vanilla and sandalwood thicken the base. An Art and Olfaction Awards finalist, and honey rendered as a whole hive rather than a drizzle.

$12.99 · 2ml · Nos RepublicJuniper and wet pine cut through leather and green daffodils. A wolf on a cliff edge as a symbol of freedom, quoting Margaret Atwood on the cover. Canali built the forest from several different cedars, Virginian, Texan, Chinese and Moroccan, against wild daffodils for a spring lift. A green leather made from actual raw materials rather than one generic fresh woods accord. Wear it outdoors in cool weather.

Two Minutes after the Kiss
$12.99 · 2ml · Azman, Special EditionHis Azman debut, at thirty percent. The brief was the instant an embrace ends, before you know whether it was seduction or goodbye. Turkish rose, Jamaican pepper, Omani frankincense and cardamom open onto rose absolute, Laos oud, Indonesian patchouli, Somalian myrrh and French beeswax, closing on Indian sandalwood, Haitian vetiver, dark leather and labdanum. This concentrated edition trades nuance for sheer weight. Two sprays is plenty and three is too many.

- Do the Fundamental pairing first. The 2015 and the 2.023 side by side, on separate arms. It is the closest thing in niche to a controlled experiment, and it will teach you more about how a formula ages than any review can.
- Then Nuvolari against Odenaturae. Petrol and asphalt on one arm, wild Mediterranean herbs on the other. Same perfumer, two years apart, and nothing whatsoever in common.
- Bee is the crowd pleaser. If you are buying a set for someone who does not read note lists, this is the one they will keep.
- Watch for the naturals. Sandalwood is his stated favourite material, and since joining MANE he has leaned into e-Pure Jungle Essence extractions, which is exactly what you are smelling in the peach and green tea of Idìlios and the juniper of Hyperion.
