Bertrand Duchaufour wrote Avignon, Timbuktu, Sartorial and Jubilation XXV. Then in March 2025 he opened a boutique in the Marais, called the house L'Entropiste, and put a new job title on his own business card: Perfumer, Master of Disorder.
Perfumer Spotlight
If you have been into niche perfumery for more than a year, you have worn his work. Avignon. Timbuktu. Dzongkha. Sartorial. Havana Vanille. Nuit de Tubereuse. Séville à l'aube. Jubilation XXV. Trayee and Mohur. Roughly four hundred fragrances across four decades, and the reputation that follows him everywhere: the master of incense.
He started in Grasse in 1985, training at Lautier Florasynth alongside Jean Louis Sieuzac, Michel Almairac and Dominique Ropion. Then a decade at Créations Aromatiques, which became part of Symrise. His first fragrance for L'Artisan Parfumeur was Méchant Loup in 1997, and by the late 2000s he had a private laboratory on the second floor of their flagship boutique opposite the Louvre as perfumer in residence, an arrangement that ran until roughly 2015.
Then, at an age when most perfumers of his standing are collecting lifetime achievement awards, he did something else. In March 2025 he opened L'Entropiste, a seventy square metre boutique in the Marais, as founder and creative director. He designed the fragrances, the packaging and the retail space himself. His stated reason was blunt: the niche perfumery market is saturated, and he wanted to break away from the norm.
Order comes from chaos, just as light can only exist when surrounded by darkness.
Entropy is the organising idea, and he means it literally. Entropy, a universal law that drives imbalance and leads to chaos, has become the core principle of my creations. It is consistent with how he has always described the job. My art is all about playing with balance and imbalance to create movement. And on the commercial pressure, from a 2025 interview: I constantly struggle to create the fragrances I want, fighting against the unconscious tendencies of those who expect commercial products and not necessarily elegant ones. I can make certain compromises, but ultimately, I call the shots.
He has not stopped taking outside briefs either. Amouage, Vilhelm, Penhaligon's and a young Korean house called Organ Tale have all had new work from him since 2022. Here is everything of his we currently have in 2ml.
L'Entropiste
Twenty five percent concentration, no client, no brief, no committee. The launch collection was six fragrances and the line has since grown to eight. These six are the ones we carry, and read together they are the least compromised thing he has ever put his name to.
Ensang Noir
$12.99 · 2ml · L'EntropisteA red rose pressed into ink and set alight. His own line for it is a passionate declaration of love written in ink and in blood, built on Ethiopian Boswellia papyrifera. Blackcurrant sharpens the opening before a smoky rose takes over with incense and a black ink accord, and metallic aldehydes and opoponax carry the base. The ink is genuinely unusual and stops this being another gothic rose. Deliberately not sweet.

Dorian's Spleen
$12.99 · 2ml · L'EntropisteA glass of whisky abandoned beside a cold ashtray. A figure consumed by eternal melancholy, looking for relief in excess. An amber glow in a glass of spirits, until Dorian's dark soul eventually takes over. Whisky, caramel, coffee and dark chocolate open rich and bitter, then the spices thin out and the drydown turns to ash and smoke. Gourmand in structure but not remotely sweet, and that bitterness is what makes it worth owning.

Blanc Sada
$12.99 · 2ml · L'EntropisteFace powder and fresh tatami in a very quiet room. The brief is a question: a free spirited lover, or a dangerous criminal? Powdered face, porcelain reflections, geisha makeup. Tart lychee leads, then a green accord of straw and tatami settles into milky rice powder and iris. Better than most powdery irises because the straw keeps it from reading as cosmetic. It sits close and stays soft for hours.

Altamura
$12.99 · 2ml · L'EntropisteOrange liqueur poured over a smouldering censer. Everything around me moves as if in the brilliance of a cosmic breath, is how the house puts it. It opens on effervescent sweet orange with a Cointreau warmth, then spices lift and the whole thing expands into a cloud of frankincense and amber. The boozy citrus is the selling point and it does not last long. Stay for the incense, which turns dry and faintly medicinal, more church than cocktail.

Semence Douce
$12.99 · 2ml · L'EntropisteAlmond milk cut with green sap and a thread of saffron. A tulip composition about transience, its white fleshy curves unfolding before dissolving. Warm almond milk and saffron open savoury and sweet at once, then a green tulip accord runs through the middle with a sticky, resinous edge. The almond and saffron pairing is lovely. The tulip is the gamble, carrying a rough scratch that some read as texture and others as a fault.

Dawn Whispers
$12.99 · 2ml · L'EntropisteCold air at first light, then something warm underneath. A character called Orion searching across past and future lives, and a déjà vu at the edge of consciousness. A sharp ozonic opening gives way to lactonic milkiness, and the drydown is white woods, musk and a low amber warmth. The transition is the entire point, so the first ten minutes will mislead you. Give it an hour before deciding.

He wrote Jubilation XXV in 2007, one of the fragrances that made Amouage's name in the West. Sixteen years later the house asked him back to rewrite his own work for its fortieth anniversary, which is not a commission many perfumers ever get.

$28.99 · 2ml · 2023, ExtraitJubilation at full ceremonial scale. The fortieth anniversary extrait, and a deliberate homage to his own 2007 original. The brief was to respect the structure of XXV while adding blackcurrant beside its signature blackberry. Rosemary, labdanum, orange and davana open, then Scotch broom, frankincense, cinnamon, clove and rose, landing on patchouli, cistus, opoponax, myrrh, moss, ambergris and oud. Regal, intricate and beautifully mature.

$14.99 · 2ml · The EssencesWarm hazelnut opening into a deep archive of woods and resins. Cause and effect, echoes of thought, a sequence of events, is how Amouage frames it. Cardamom, hazelnut, cinnamon and schinus molle move into patchouli, pine, cashmeran, amber and cypriol, and the base is benzoin, cistus, sandalwood, cedar, vetiver, myrrh, oakmoss and palo santo. Thirty percent essence, six months ageing with a double infusion over sandalwood chips and in oak barrels.

The best value on this page by a distance, and the pair of them make an unusually clear case for what he does with texture rather than volume. Both are dry, both are savoury, and neither behaves like the gourmands they keep getting shelved beside.
To My Father
$10.99 · 2ml · 2022Peated whisky poured over old oak and leather. Fatherhood in all its complexity, as the house puts it, built on what it calls a vertical whisky accord with strongly peated facets. Ambrette seed, bitter orange and davana open before the whisky takes hold, and cabreuva, cade, oakwood and leather give the base its smoke. The whisky convinces, peaty rather than sugary, which very few boozy fragrances manage.

Faces of Francis
$10.99 · 2ml · 2023Toasted pistachio over driftwood and dry smoke. The house describes standing beside the artist in the studio, a volcanic island somewhere in the Mediterranean, the colours and smells of Tangier where pistachio mixes with saffron. Aldehydes and saffron lift the opening, grilled pistachio, juniper wood and driftwood carry the middle, and oud, ambergris, cypriol, vetiver and pyrogenic styrax dry it into something mineral. The pistachio is savoury, not sugared.

Chypre Palatin and Or du Sérail are the two on this page that turn up on best of the decade lists. The Organ Tale pair are recent work for a young Korean house whose founder said plainly that she started the brand because she wanted to share Duchaufour's philosophy on perfume.
Chypre Palatin
$12.99 · 2ml · MDCI, 2012A green floral chypre built on the old scale. Three movements, as though you were walking from one grand room to another in an Italian palazzo. Green clementine and galbanum laced hyacinth give way to lavender, rose, jasmine and iris, and the base is leather, castoreum, styrax and benzoin. Duchaufour working in a vintage idiom rather than his usual airy one. The animalic base is smooth rather than sharp, which makes it wearable where a genuine vintage chypre often is not.

Or du Sérail
$14.99 · 2ml · Naomi Goodsir, 2014Dried fruit, honey and shisha smoke in a gilded room. A meditation on dried fruits and tobacco, rendered airy rather than heavy. Apple, mango and sweet orange arrive soaked in rum and davana, beeswax and honey thicken the middle with geranium and ylang ylang, and Turkish tobacco settles onto labdanum, oak, cedar, maté and vanilla. The fruit is dried and sticky rather than fresh, which is the only reason this avoids cloying. With this many moving parts it genuinely reads differently on different skin.

$12.99 · 2ml · Organ Tale, 2024Rosemary and bitter citrus settle into jasmine tea and cedar. A cologne absolute for a house born from the memory of a mother's embrace. Rosemary, bergamot, lime and lemon open sharp and green before jasmine, tea and petitgrain settle it into an aromatic, slightly bitter heart, with nutmeg, cardamom, violet, amberwood and cedar behind. That citrus stack is bright and appealing and also the part least likely to survive the first hour, so wear it in daylight and warm weather.

Fleur de Bonbon
$12.99 · 2ml · Organ Tale, 2024Orange and lychee turn powdery under jasmine and warm saffron. The house calls it a very original perfume inspired by a pink fruit. Orange, lemon and lychee open bright and a little tart, jasmine and geranium float over it, iris adds a powdery lift, and saffron closes the drydown with a warmer, more spiced finish than a fruity floral usually gets. It is pitched as sillage heavy, so a poor pick if you want something private.

- Start with Chypre Palatin. It is the most complete thing on this page and the clearest demonstration that a man known for airy incense can also build something dense and old fashioned when he wants to.
- Then take the whole L'Entropiste six as one object. Rice powder, whisky and ash, black ink, almond and tulip, cosmic orange, cold dawn air. No client would have signed off on that spread, which is precisely why he opened his own shop.
- Vilhelm is the value entry. At $10.99 each, To My Father and Faces of Francis are the cheapest way to hear how he handles a savoury note without letting it turn sweet.
- Listen for the incense. He is called the master of it, and once you have found it in Altamura, Ensang Noir and Jubilation 40 you will start finding it everywhere in his catalogue.
- One small thing worth knowing. In a 2010 interview he mentioned coming back from Japan with an idea about rice and black ink. Fifteen years later he opened his own house and released Blanc Sada and Ensang Noir. Some ideas take a while to find the right owner.
