Two Theatre Degrees and Every Barrois: Quentin Bisch

The Index · Perfumer Profile

He Studied Theatre.
Then He Wrote
Ganymede.

A chemistry teacher told him he would never be a perfumer. He took two master's degrees in theatre instead, ran a troupe for six years, and then talked his way into Givaudan. Roughly two hundred and fifty fragrances later, he has written every Marc-Antoine Barrois ever released.

22Bottles To Try

He was eleven when his French teacher walked past wearing Opium and he decided what he was going to be. A chemistry teacher in high school openly laughed at him for it. He is now the perfumer behind Chloé Nomade, Parfums de Marly Delina, Le Mâle Le Parfum, Essential Parfums Bois Impérial and every bottle Marc-Antoine Barrois has ever sold.

The route was not straight. Born in Strasbourg in 1983, he started a science degree and abandoned it after a year because his maths and chemistry results were poor. He took two master's degrees in theatre studies instead, directed musical shows and ran a troupe for about six years. Then he started writing to people in the industry.

Jean Guichard, who ran the Givaudan Perfumery School, told him to go and get his hands on the actual raw materials first. So he spent a year as a perfumer's assistant at Robertet in Grasse under Michel Almairac, then sat through roughly ten more interviews before Givaudan finally said yes in 2008. His first commercial fragrance came in 2010. His breakthrough, Etat Libre d'Orange La Fin du Monde, came in 2013.

I'm allergic to long formulae. It's better to take some raw materials out than to put more in.

That is the single most useful thing to know about him. He works by subtraction. Short formulae are easier to understand, you can get lost very easily when you have two pages of raw materials. His teachers trained him to add one material at a time and ask whether it brought anything; if not, it went. It is why a Bisch fragrance usually has one clear idea you can name out loud, and why Ganymede smells like about four things rather than forty.

In 2023 he won the Prix du Phénix, the award formerly known as the Prix François Coty, judged by a jury including Maurice Roucel and Dominique Ropion. The citation named Encelade and Scandal pour Homme together, niche and blockbuster, as proof he could do both. He also paints in black ink, writes, and sings in the Paris métro.

Here is everything of his we currently have in 2ml, house by house.

House 01

Marc-Antoine Barrois

Paris · 2016 to 2026 · The complete catalogue

Barrois is a couturier, not a perfumer. They met in 2015 and the brand's own site describes it as love at first sight, professionally and creatively: Marc-Antoine expressed his emotions and imagination, while Quentin transformed them into perfume. Eight fragrances exist. Bisch is the only perfumer ever credited on any of them, and we carry all eight.

Marc-Antoine Barrois Ganymede

Ganymede

$10.99 · 2ml · 2019

Four notes and a new genre. Mandarin, osmanthus, a leather accord, then Akigalawood and immortelle. That is the entire list. Named for Jupiter's moon and the Trojan prince granted eternal youth, and the house calls it a divine skin. Mineral, airy, enormous sillage from almost nothing. The clearest possible argument for short formulae.

Mandarin · Osmanthus · Leather · Akigalawood · Immortelle
Marc-Antoine Barrois Ganymede Extrait

Ganymede Extrait

$22.99 · 2ml · 2023

The same moon with an atmosphere. Immortelle and mandarin up top, then incense, myrrh, saffron and the leather accord, closing on Akigalawood and leather. The house describes warm velvet dunes. It is not simply stronger, it is warmer and more aromatic, and the immortelle moves from the shadows to the front.

Immortelle · Incense · Myrrh · Saffron · Leather · Akigalawood
Marc-Antoine Barrois B683

B683

$12.99 · 2ml · 2016

The first one, and still the house signature. Black pepper, chilli and saffron over violet leaf and leather, landing on sandalwood, patchouli and oakmoss. Named for the asteroid in The Little Prince and for Barrois' birthday. The idea is sprezzatura, the dandy's studied carelessness, and the house calls it a heady sobriety.

Black Pepper · Chilli · Saffron · Violet Leaf · Leather · Oakmoss
Marc-Antoine Barrois B683 Extrait

B683 Extrait

$22.99 · 2ml · 2020

Green apple and Laotian oud, which nobody expected. The extrait keeps saffron and the leather accord but swaps the whole opening and finishes on patchouli and vanilla. The house calls it deliciously carnal. Buy it beside the eau de parfum, because the two are genuinely different compositions rather than two strengths of one.

Green Apple · Laotian Oud · Saffron · Leather · Patchouli · Vanilla
Marc-Antoine Barrois Encelade

Encelade

$10.99 · 2ml · 2022

Rhubarb into smoke. A striking acidic rhubarb opening, then the leather accord and Atlas cedar, then vetiver, tonka and the milky smokiness of sandalwood. Named for Saturn's geyser moon. This is the one the Prix du Phénix jury singled out as his niche work, and the rhubarb is the reason.

Rhubarb · Leather · Atlas Cedar · Vetiver · Tonka · Sandalwood
Marc-Antoine Barrois Tilia

Tilia

$12.99 · 2ml · 2024

The scent of happy days, as the house has it. Linden blossom and broom over jasmine sambac and heliotrope, closing on vetiver, Georgywood and Ambroxan. Countryside lunches, tree shaded benches, laundry dried in sun. The outlier of the line and the only one that is unambiguously gentle.

Linden Blossom · Broom · Jasmine Sambac · Heliotrope · Georgywood
Marc-Antoine Barrois Aldebaran

Aldebaran

$10.99 · 2ml · 2025

Three notes again: paprika, tuberose, tonka. His own recipe, more or less verbatim: born from a bouquet of tuberose, sprinkle with paprika, tonka bean for addiction. A journey from shadow to light, moonlight on tuberose petals. Proof that the Ganymede trick was not a one off.

Paprika Accord · Maté · Tuberose Absolute · Tonka Bean
Marc-Antoine Barrois B87.135

B87.135

$12.99 · 2ml · 2026, Harrods exclusive

A third reading of B683, made for Harrods. Pink peppercorn and ambrette seed over myrrh, saffron, rose oil and iris butter, closing on cedar, patchouli, vetiver and Georgywood. The brief was One Thousand and One Nights crossed with the Harrods interior. Richer and more oriental than either previous B683.

Ambrette Seed · Myrrh · Saffron · Rose Oil · Iris Butter · Georgywood

Amouage

Oman · Five in stock · The Odyssey Collection

Amouage rates him highly enough to sell an official Quentin Bisch discovery set. Amouage's own copy calls him a madly gifted artist, at once painter, singer, writer and perfumer. Three of these five are Exceptional Extraits at forty two, forty six and fifty percent oil.

Amouage Decision

Decision

$14.99 · 2ml · 2025

Juniper trees bent by weather on Jebel Shams. The final chapter of the Odyssey Collection. Pink pepper, bergamot and cardamom into frankincense, juniper and myrrh, then patchouli, cedar and vanilla. Built on the paradox at the heart of any real decision: focused on its goal while staying open to everything else.

Pink Pepper · Cardamom · Frankincense · Juniper · Myrrh · Vanilla
Amouage Decision 42

Decision 42

$32.99 · 2ml · 2026, 42% Extrait

Lightning hits the juniper tree. The same composition asked a harder question: destruction, or deeper renewal? Neroli and cinnamon join the top, sandalwood and rectified pine tar join the heart, labdanum joins the base. The pine tar is the whole difference and it is worth the jump in price to smell what it does.

Neroli · Cinnamon · Juniper · Rectified Pine Tar · Labdanum · Myrrh
Amouage Guidance 46

Guidance 46

$16.99 · 2ml · 2024, 46% Extrait

A study in light and shade, fragility and strength. Pear, frankincense, hazelnut, rose water, pink pepper and bitter almond open, saffron, rose, sambac jasmine and osmanthus fill the heart, and cistus, sandalwood, Akigalawood, ambergris, vanilla, ambrette, Georgywood and cypriol run underneath. The longest formula on this page, and deliberately so.

Pear · Hazelnut · Bitter Almond · Saffron · Osmanthus · Ambergris
Amouage Purpose 50

Purpose 50

$16.99 · 2ml · 2025, 50% Extrait

Fifty percent oil, and it behaves like it. Bergamot, pink pepper, frankincense and pimento berry over rose, sand vetiver, sandalwood and papyrus, closing on saffron, suede, Akigalawood and vanilla. Amouage describes a connection to the earth itself, with its ancient soul and endless patience. The sandalwood and vanillin give it a creamy woody earthiness nothing else here has.

Pimento Berry · Sand Vetiver · Papyrus · Saffron · Suede · Akigalawood
Amouage Existence

Existence

$14.99 · 2ml · 2025

The serenity of endlessness. Lily of the valley and rose over frankincense, Mystikal and labdanum, then ambergris, white musk and benzoin. Aldehydes do the work up top, and the brief was the incomprehensible vastness of the infinite with all of its life affirming optimism. The quietest and most luminous thing he has done for the house.

Aldehydes · Lily of the Valley · Frankincense · Labdanum · Ambergris · Benzoin
Houses 03 and 04

Ex Nihilo and Maison Crivelli

Paris · Four in stock

Fleur Narcotique is the one most people have actually smelled, and it more or less built Ex Nihilo. The two Crivellis are what he does when a house hands him a single image and tells him to render it.

Ex Nihilo Fleur Narcotique Extrait

Fleur Narcotique Extrait

$14.99 · 2ml · Ex Nihilo

The fragrance that made the house. Bergamot, lychee and peach over Petalia, orange blossom and jasmine, closing on musk, transparent wood and moss. Written in 2013, when he had been a working perfumer for about a year. Poised at the edge of transgression, as the house puts it, though what it actually smells like is a fruity floral built by someone with taste.

Lychee · Peach · Petalia · Orange Blossom · Jasmine · Transparent Wood
Ex Nihilo French Affair

French Affair

$12.99 · 2ml · Ex Nihilo, 2017

The seventies, seen from boulevard Saint Germain. Violet leaf absolute, bergamot and lychee over rose absolute, pepper and angelica, then oakmoss, patchouli, cedar and vetiver. A chypre structure wearing modern clothes. The angelica is the interesting decision and the oakmoss is what makes it read as a period piece rather than a pastiche.

Violet Leaf Absolute · Rose Absolute · Angelica · Oakmoss · Patchouli
Maison Crivelli Patchouli Magnetik

Patchouli Magnetik

$18.99 · 2ml · Maison Crivelli, 2022

A motorcycle ride through patchouli fields during a tropical storm. That is the actual brief. White peach and a gardenia accord open, sandalwood, gardenia and frangipani sit in the middle, and Orpur grade patchouli oil, benzoin absolute, vanilla absolute and leather run the base. Dark woody patchouli lit from above by the florals.

White Peach · Gardenia · Frangipani · Patchouli Orpur · Benzoin · Leather
Maison Crivelli Tubéreuse Astrale

Tubéreuse Astrale

$18.99 · 2ml · Maison Crivelli, 2024

Tuberose under the Milky Way. A spicy powdery cinnamon bark opening, then tuberose absolute, osmanthus absolute, carrot seed and vanilla, closing on what the house calls a leather nebula. Thirty two percent, vegan, Givaudan Orpur naturals. A floral leather, which is a harder thing to build than it sounds.

Cinnamon Bark · Tuberose Absolute · Osmanthus · Carrot Seed · Leather

Five More Rooms

Parfums de Marly · Jean Paul Gaultier · Bon Parfumeur · Organ Tale · Granado

Designer, niche, Korean, Brazilian. He says he is not the same perfumer when he works for Chloé as when he works for Paco Rabanne, and this is where you can test that.

Parfums de Marly Carlisle

Carlisle

$10.99 · 2ml · Parfums de Marly, 2015

Green apple and nutmeg over a warm patchouli floor. Saffron up top, then tonka, rose, osmanthus and davana, closing on vanilla, patchouli and opopanax. The house calls it explosive, captivating and intense, which for once is accurate. Written the same year he first met Marc-Antoine Barrois.

Green Apple · Nutmeg · Saffron · Davana · Patchouli · Opopanax
Jean Paul Gaultier Le Mâle Elixir

Le Mâle Elixir

$8.99 · 2ml · Jean Paul Gaultier, 2023

The sailor at his sweetest. Lavender and mint over vanilla and benzoin, closing on honey, tonka and tobacco. He has written most of the modern Le Mâle line including Le Parfum, and this is the richest of them. The honey is what divides people. Cheapest entry point to his work on this page.

Lavender · Mint · Vanilla · Benzoin · Honey · Tonka · Tobacco
Bon Parfumeur 403 Myrrh Shadow

403 Myrrh Shadow

$12.99 · 2ml · Bon Parfumeur, 2025

Co signed with Amélie Jacquin, and the only co composition here. Bitter orange, grapefruit and blackcurrant bud open, basil, cinnamon bark, Timut pepper and French cypress build the middle, and Atlas cedar, Akigalawood, patchouli heart, myrrh, benzoin, vanilla and Cosmone close it. Pitched as an Arabian Nights amber rewritten with textured woods.

Blackcurrant Bud · Timut Pepper · Cypress · Myrrh · Akigalawood · Cosmone
Organ Tale Printemps

Printemps

$12.99 · 2ml · Organ Tale, 2024

A student formula, finally released. This began as an early composition from his time at the Givaudan school and took four years of work to become a product. Apple, peach, lemon, muguet, jasmine and honey over musk, sandalwood and transparent wood. Woody, fruity and blindingly fresh, and the only chance you have to smell the young version of him.

Apple · Peach · Muguet · Jasmine · Honey · Sandalwood
Granado Rosa Sublime

Rosa Sublime

$8.99 · 2ml · Granado, 2025

A rose written for Brazil. Cassis, nutmeg and davana over rose, geranium and jasmine, landing on saffron, amber and sandalwood. Eighty one percent naturals and macerated. Granado is a heritage Brazilian house going back to 1870, and this is a straight tribute to the flower rather than an attempt to subvert it. At $8.99 it is the quiet bargain of the page.

Cassis · Nutmeg · Davana · Rose · Geranium · Saffron · Sandalwood

How to hear a perfumer

  1. Start with Ganymede. Five notes. Read the list, then smell it, then try to work out where the size comes from. That gap is the whole case for how he works.
  2. Then do B683 against B683 Extrait. Same name, different compositions. Saffron and leather survive; everything else is rewritten. Very few houses will let a perfumer do that to a signature.
  3. Guidance 46 is the counterexample. Eighteen notes from a man allergic to long formulae. Worth owning precisely because it argues with everything else on this page.
  4. Printemps is the deep cut. A composition he wrote as a student at the Givaudan school, released fifteen years later. Nothing else here shows you where he started.
  5. Watch for the leather accord. It runs through B683, both Ganymedes, Encelade, B87.135 and Tubéreuse Astrale. It is closer to a signature than any single raw material he uses.
  6. Everything here is a 2ml KSI hand decant, taken from an authentic bottle into an atomizer so you can wear it properly before committing. Samples are final sale. Questions before you order, email info@kaleidoscopescentindex.com.

Twenty two bottles.
One perfumer.

Everything of his we carry, in one place, including the complete Marc-Antoine Barrois catalogue. If you only take three, take Ganymede, Encelade and Decision 42.
