Three Bottles, Two of Them Properly Cold: Muneefa Sulaiman

Three Bottles.
Two of Them
Properly Cold.

Not fresh. Not clean. Cold, as in wet soil and wet rock and air that has just had rain in it. Muneefa Sulaiman arrived this year with three fragrances and an unusually clear idea of what she is after.

There is a word the fragrance industry has worn out, and the word is fresh. Two of these three are not fresh. They are cold, which is a different thing entirely and much harder to do.

Fresh, as the counter uses it, means laundered. Citrus, white musk, a clean sheet, a shower gel. It is pleasant and it is everywhere and it does not smell like anything that exists outdoors. Cold is the other direction: damp ground, wet stone, the drop in temperature that comes before rain rather than the soap that comes after a shower. Very few houses go for it, because it does not test well and it does not read as luxury in a two second spray on a card.

Morning Rain and Dark Moss both go for it, and from different angles. One is soil, the other is salt on rock. Then Saddle turns around completely and goes dry, warm and faintly animal. For a house with only three bottles out, that is a wide spread and no overlap at all, which tells you more about the ambition than any founding statement could.

There is a mushroom note in the debut rain fragrance, and it is the best decision on the shelf.

That is worth pausing on. Petrichor fragrances are a crowded little genre and almost all of them cheat: they give you ozone and a clean musk and call it rain, which smells like a dryer sheet in a thunderstorm. Morning Rain puts a mushroom note in the heart instead, faintly fungal and cold, sitting over bran and moist earth. It is the thing that makes the fragrance read as actual ground rather than as an idea of weather. It is also, commercially, a slightly reckless note to build a debut around, and that is exactly why it works.

Dark Moss plays the temperature trick differently. Sea salt, yuzu and green cognac open genuinely cold, all mineral and citrus coming off wet stone, and then coffee and cocoa arrive underneath where you do not expect them. It should tip into dessert and it never does, because the oakmoss keeps a bitter edge running the whole way through. Of the three this is the one most likely to get you stopped and asked.

Saddle is the house proving it is not a one trick operation. Saffron and leather is heavily worked ground and the opening alone would not distinguish it. The middle does: hay, wool and ambrette seeds give it a dry animal texture that most saffron leathers walk straight past, so it lands closer to a tack room than to a new handbag, which is plainly what the name is after.

Now the honest part, and it turned out to be the most interesting thing on this page. This house is very close to undocumented. We went looking properly and came back with almost nothing. No Fragrantica entry. No Parfumo entry. No press, no interview, no review, not a single forum thread, in English or in Arabic. We could not find another retailer carrying it anywhere. For compositions this considered, that is a strange silence.

So we are not going to hand you a borrowed biography assembled out of guesswork. What we can tell you is what is in the bottles, which comes from the house, and what they do on skin, which comes from wearing them. You are buying these on the composition rather than on a reputation, and with three fragrances this specific that is a fair trade. If you want the story behind them, so do we.

One warning that will save you a confusing evening. All three of these names have a near twin from another house. Perfumer H, the London maker, has a Saddle at the same fifty millilitres, and also a Moss and a Rain Moss. Search any of these names and what comes back is far more likely to be theirs, and the fragrances are not remotely alike: the Perfumer H Saddle is an amber built on bergamot, orange flower and vanilla, where this one is saffron over hay, wool and leather. There is an unrelated Morning Rain from Oakcha as well. If you read reviews before you buy, check whose bottle you are reading about.

One practical thing before you read on, because it changes how you should approach this page. There are no decants. These are stocked as full bottles only, so the usual KSI routine of testing a 2ml before committing is not available here. Read the notes properly and pick the one that is actually you.

Chapter 01

The Cold Two

Wet ground and wet rock · 50ml

Both of these open cold, and that is the most distinctive thing about this house. Not fresh, not clean, not the laundered brightness that usually passes for freshness. Cold, as in damp soil and wet stone and air that has just had rain in it. One goes after the ground itself and the other after salt and moss with coffee buried underneath. Put them beside almost anything else marketed as fresh and the difference is immediate.

Muneefa Sulaiman Morning Rain

Morning Rain

2026 · 50ml $185

Petrichor done properly: first rain on desert ground. Bergamot, mint leaves and ozonic notes open cool and wet, then lavender, fir balsam and a mushroom note build a damp green heart, and bran over moist earth closes it. Most rain fragrances settle for clean and call the job finished. This one goes after the soil instead, and the mushroom in the heart is what sells it, faintly fungal and cold in a way that reads as actual ground rather than fabric softener. The trade is real: it stays quiet on skin, so if you are shopping for projection this is the wrong bottle. Spring and early autumn.

Muneefa Sulaiman Dark Moss

Dark Moss

2026 · 50ml $185

Sea salt and oakmoss over a warm cup of coffee. Sea salt, yuzu and green cognac open cold and bright, oakmoss, ozonic notes, coffee and cocoa fill the heart, and patchouli, tonka bean and vetiver ground the base. The trick here is temperature. The opening is genuinely cold, all salt and citrus coming off wet rock, and then coffee and cocoa arrive underneath without ever tipping into dessert, because the oakmoss keeps the whole thing bitter enough to stay serious. This is the most wearable of the three and the one most likely to get asked about.

Chapter 02

The Warm One

Dry, animal and the outlier of the three · 50ml

Then the house turns around completely. Saddle is dry where the other two are wet and warm where they are cold, and it is the one that tells you this is not a brand with a single trick. Saffron and leather is heavily worked ground, so the interesting question is what a new house does with it.

2026 · 50ml $185

Hay, wool and leather, with saffron laid over the top. Saffron, ginger and coriander seeds open warm and dry, hay, wool and ambrette seeds fill the heart, and sandalwood, oak and leather carry the base. Saffron and leather has been done to death, and what saves this one is the middle. Hay, wool and ambrette give it a dry animal texture that most saffron leathers skip straight past, so it smells like a tack room rather than a new handbag, which is plainly the point of the name. Too heavy for warm weather and excellent once it turns.

How to hear a house

  1. Start with Dark Moss. It is the most wearable of the three and the one most likely to get you stopped and asked. Salt and yuzu off cold wet rock, then coffee and cocoa arriving underneath without ever turning into dessert, with oakmoss keeping the whole thing bitter enough to stay serious.
  2. There are no decants. This is the thing to understand before anything else. We stock these as full bottles only, so there is no 2ml to test drive first. Read the notes carefully and buy the one that sounds like you, because the usual KSI safety net is not here.
  3. Do not buy Morning Rain for projection. It is the quietest of the three by a distance and it stays close to the skin. That is a deliberate choice that suits what it is doing, and it is the wrong bottle if you want to be noticed across a room.
  4. Morning Rain is the one to try if you have given up on rain fragrances. Most of them are clean and stop there. This one goes after the soil, and the mushroom note in the heart is what makes it read as actual wet ground rather than laundry.
  5. Saddle is a cold weather bottle. Saffron, hay, wool and leather is too much in heat and very good once the temperature drops. The hay and wool in the middle are what separate it from the many saffron leathers that smell like a shop rather than a stable.
  6. Check whose bottle you are reading about. Perfumer H has a Saddle at the same size, plus a Moss and a Rain Moss, and Oakcha has a Morning Rain. Reviews you find by searching these names are more likely to be about those than about these.
  7. All three arrived in 2026. This is a new house with no long track record behind it and almost nothing published about it, so you are buying on the composition rather than on reputation. We would rather say that plainly than dress it up.
  8. Two cold, one warm, and no overlap. For a house with only three fragrances out, the spread is unusually wide. Nothing here repeats anything else here, which tells you more about the ambition than any founding statement would.
  9. Questions before you order? Email info@kaleidoscopescentindex.com and we will tell you which one is actually yours. All fragrance purchases are final sale.
